Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., (born October 17, 1984) is a Ghanaian-born producer and reggae-dancehall musician. He is known by his stage nameShatta Wale, formerly Bandana.[1] His best known song is 'Dancehall King', which led to winning the Artiste of the Year at the 2014 edition of the Ghana Music Awards. Wale is also an actor, having appeared in the films Never Say Never[2],The trial of Shatta Wale[3] and Shattered Lives.[4]

Having achieved street credibility in a fairly undeveloped Ghanaian dancehall genre at the time, he achieved popularity with his 2004 single, 'Moko Hoo', which features Tinny. Then known in the industry as Bandana, the song earned him a Ghana Music Awards nomination. There afterwards, Bandana went missing in the music circus for nearly a decade until rebranding himself in 2013. He began releasing music under a new name, Shatta Wale, under his own record label (SM For Lyf Records).[5]

In 2014, he peaked number 38 on E.tv's 'Top 100 Most Influential Ghanaians' Awards chart.[6][7] He has since appeared on the chart each year. He was ranked 'Most Influential Musician' on social media in 2017.[8] he won 8 awards at the 3music awards in 2019

Early life

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. was born in Accra, Ghana at the Police Hospital on October 17, 1984. The son of a couple from Accra and the Volta Region of Ghana, his father is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Sr, a politician, businessman and legal practitioner. Shatta Wale attended Seven Great Princes Academy at Dansoman, a suburb in Accra, where he demonstrated an affinity for arts and acted in a popular Akan drama series, By the Fireside, at the National Theatre of Ghana.[9] Growing up, he lived with his family in Laterbiokorshie, Dansoman and then later Korle Gonno during his formative years. In a Facebook live video, Wale stated that he did not enjoy motherly love and care at the early stages of his life because a pastor caused a separation between his parents which made him remain under his father's care and later ending up on the streets.[10] His mother is Elsie Evelyn Avemegah.

As a child, his father introduced him to the Jamaican culture by playing Reggae records in the house and also continuously traveling with him to the UK to meet his relatives who were half Jamaicans. These exposures made him develop love for music at a tender age. His intense passion to do music made him lose interest in schooling but his father forced him to complete his high school education later in the Volta Region of Ghana which had initially kicked off at the Winneba Secondary School in the Central Region of Ghana. Even in school and right after school he pursued his musical dream but his father did not agree and wanted him to become a lawyer, this led to a misunderstanding between the two eventually tearing down their beautiful relationship. Shatta Wale lived in almost all the ghettos (Nima) in Accra just to survive: 'There were many times I slept without food. I have been through all the hustle in life, I mean hell. I have lived with the people and became one of their own. No wonder my music easily resonate with the people. I am thankful to God for making me see the day light.' Stated in an interview.

Shatta Wale later went to Jamaica to polish and master his dancehall craft. 'Every boy in Ghana doing dancehall came for tutelage from me before mastering the dancehall genre. So no wonder my fans call me King because they know the history of modern dancehall in Ghana' Shatta Wale stated in an interview.

Career

2004–: Career beginnings

His musical career began during his high school days at the Winneba Secondary School where he learned to play keyboard and received routine vocal training at the school's music class department, then known as Doggy. After secondary school, he took time to work on his music. Having achieved street credibility in a fairly undeveloped Ghanaian dancehall genre at the time, he soon gain recognition with his hit single, 'Moko Hoo', which featured fellow Ghanaian musician Tinny in 2004 using Bandana as his stage name. The song earned him a nomination at the Ghana Music Awards that year. Bandana followed with the hit songs 'No Problem' and 'Obaa Yaa'. At this point, he was receiving heavy rotation on radio and was backed by a fan base that shot him into the mainstream Ghanaian music scene. Despite his prominence, Bandana went missing in the music circus in Ghana.

2009–2012

With a rebranded name from Bandana to Shatta Wale, he started a new career which largely bothers on dancehall in a Jamaican style of production in Nima, a small community in Accra, Ghana, a place that harbors a lot of Muslim youth and ghettos. It was there he amassed a fanbase, who were influenced by him and felt empowered by his songs.[citation needed] Wale released songs almost everyday on his social media handles free to download and would performed them in small communities in Accra mostly in Nima. He started gaining slow attention again with songs like 'Telephone No' 'Anastasia' 'My Eyes Pon Di Money' and others. This approach revived dancehall in Ghana, a genre which had been left abandoned. The likes of Root Eye, General Marcus, Yoggy Doggy and others years ago had started but could not breakthrough. Shatta Wale gives credit to the likes of Terry Bonchaka and Yoggy Doggy for nurturing him when he began his dancehall journey. 'It was under their tutelage that they told me I was going to blow up and that my style is so unique.' Stated in an interview on PeaceFm.He explained in an interview with King Lagazee why he had been less active and what the reason for his decreased popularity was.

A lot of people wan mi fi dead but mi dehya. I know my fans have missed me but mi naa dead. I was learning how to produce beats, mix and master and also perfecting my craft. So basically that is what is keeping me away.

– Wale, then known as Bandana, on his decreased visibility in the music industry

2013–2015

Largely producing and mastering majority of his songs such as 'Havana', 'Shatta City', 'Enter the Net', 'Everybody Likes My Tin', and 'Dancehall King', the latter of which became his biggest hit after his comeback. The tracks were well received in Ghana and globally, with critics talking about the influence of Jamaican dancehall as many Ghanaians were only used to the type of dancehall called Hiplife with a touch of ragga.[citation needed] Wale then successfully toured Canada and United States in 2014.

The Guardian qualified 'Wine Ya Waist' featuring Davido among its five must listened new tracks from around the world.[11]By 2015, without a doubt, he has cemented his place on the global music space as a force to reckon with in dancehall music with a solid repertoire of hit songs that were receiving international awards and nominations which some includes; International Reggae & World Music Awards, Nigeria Entertainment Awards, MOBO etc. He toured Europe in 2015, and also shared the same stage with P-Square, Flavor and others at the Wembley Arena in London.

2016–2018

In a heated political atmosphere, Wale became one of the most powerful men in Ghana as two biggest political parties, National Democratic Congress[12] and the New Patriotic Party used his hit songs; 'Mahama Paper' and 'Kakai' to run their campaign in the 2016 general election. In a desultory conversation with an interviewer, Wale stated that: There were some attempts by some members from the political parties to coax him to endorse their party but he did not cling because of his fans. There were banners in town bearing Shatta Movement for NDC but Wale in a Facebook post made it clear that he has not endorsed any political party and all parties running their campaign under the Shatta Movement Banner should desist or face legal action. However, wale did not hesitate to perform for any of the political parties as his service was demanded.

Songs released from After the Storm album like 'Mahama Paper', 'Baby (Chop Kiss)', 'Biegya (Open Fire)', 'Hol'It', and 'Kakai' were successful in Ghana. Wale stayed atop the charts locally and also had 'Hol'It' top BBC Radio 1Xtra's Afroboss Top 5 songs chart.[13]Rockstar Games co-founder Sam Houser also said he was deeply impressed by the popularity of 'KAKAI' and that it made waves within the African community in the United States and beyond, including topping several dancehall charts globally. For that, he stated his wish that bureaucrats would confirm 'Kakai' to appear in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. If confirmed, Wale could earn up to $744,000 annually.[14]

In 2017, he toured the US to promote After the Storm, then traveled to Jamaica to shoot videos for projects he had jointly done with some producers there.

Bharat ennum naan movie review Bharat Ane Nenu (English: I, Bharat) is a 2018 Indian Telugu-language political action drama. The film's dubbed versions were later released in Tamil as Bharat Ennum Naan and in Malayalam as Bharat Ennum Njan on 31 May 2018. It grossed around ₹ 230.

Wale signed with Zylofon Music in January 2018.[15] He released his third album, Reign, on October 13 at the Fantasy Dome in Accra, and used the occasion to propose to his longtime girlfriend Michy on stage.[16] The album achieved a record for a Ghanaian act by appearing on the Billboard Top World Albums Chart, placing sixth.[17]

Accolades

Mayor of Worcester, Joseph Petty, presented Shatta Wale with the Key to the City on July 8, 2017, in recognition of his contributions to the arts.[18]

On March 18, 2018, Wale was presented an honoree award for his outstanding contribution to reggae in Ghana and globally at the 37th Annual Chicago Music Awards (CMA), in conjunction with the 36th International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA).[19]

Wale received an honoree award on May 11, 2018, alongside Sizzla, Queen Ifrica, Chronixx, Daddy Fresh, Winning Jah, Jah Cure, Sean Paul, Ben Priest and other personalities at the Obaland Royal Awards in Nigeria. The awards were held by an entertainment firm owned by King Ewuare II of Benin City, Edo State.[20][21] The Obaland plaque was reportedly valued by specialized anthropologists and museum critics in Benin City, and declared to be worth US$34 million.[22]

Endorsements

In 2014, Wale became a brand ambassador for Guinness Ghana Breweries.[23] and as the brand ambassador for Rush Energy Drink.[24][25][26]

In September 2017, Kasapreko Company, producers of several alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in Ghana, unveiled Wale as their newest brand ambassador.[27]

On 17 November 2017, Shatta Wale signed a deal with Boss Baker Beef Roll as the brand ambassador.[28]

'Chillin' is a song by American rapper Wale, featuring singer Lady Gaga. It was released as the lead single from his debut album, Attention Deficit, on April 14, 2009, by Allido Records. Wale had wanted to collaborate with Gaga, and were introduced to each other through the rapper's mentor, Mark Ronson. 'Chillin' was composed by a number of songwriters, including Wale and Gaga, while it was produced by Cool & Dre. Recorded in New York City, the song discusses Wale's life in his hometown. It has musical influence of 1990s style rapping, and contains two samples from the 1969 song 'Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye' by the band Steam, and the 1987 song, 'Top Billin', by Audio Two.

The song received mixed reviews from contemporary critics. Some praised Wale and Gaga's collaboration and composition, while others criticized it. 'Chillin' reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart, while in the United States it peaked at number 99 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also reached the lower regions of the record charts in some other nations. The accompanying music video features both Wale and Gaga in various locations in and around Washington D.C. and Boston, Massachusetts.

Background and writing[edit]

Wale had wanted to collaborate with Lady Gaga on the track since January 2009, believing that she embodied the party-record feel of the song. He explained: 'If music was a high school, I feel like I'll be the dude on the football team, and it would be like, 'OK, Gaga's having a party!' And you know all the bad girls are going to be out there.' Upon hearing that some were surprised by the collaboration, Wale went on to say, 'If Jay-Z can work with Coldplay, then Wale should be able to work with Gaga.'[1] Wale's mentor, Mark Ronson, sent the track to Gaga. She commented that her portion of the song, which includes lyrics such as 'Lookin' at, lookin' at, lookin' at me/ Eyes all stickin' like honey on bees', is narcissistic, but in a positive way. The lyrics capture the life and image of Wale's home areas Maryland and District of Columbia. About incorporating the hook in the song, Gaga said:

I really wanted to sit down with Wale before I wrote the hook, because to me, it's really lame when people send you tracks, and they're like, 'All right, Gaga, throw your vocals on it.' This is Wale's record. It's not my record. It's one of those songs, one of those tracks and one of those videos that you can't stop listening to.[1]

Recording and composition[edit]

Along with Wale and Gaga, songwriters who worked on 'Chillin' included Gary De Carlo, Dale Frashuer, Roy C Hammond, Paul Leka, Andre Christopher Lyon, Makeba Riddick, Kirk Robinson and Marcello Valenzano.[2] 'Chillin' has influence of 1990s style rapping, and samples from the 1969 song 'Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye' by Steam, and the 1987 song 'Top Billin' by Audio Two.[3][4][5] The song is written in the time signature of common time with a tempo of 100 beats per minute, and is composed in the key of G minor.[6] Nathan Rabin from The A.V. Club called it a 'throwback slab of electro-funk', with robotic new wave inspired vocals by Gaga.[7] After starting with the Steam sample, the song has a stripped-down beat with a bass drum and synth-claps, and synthesizers on the verses and the sample being looped in the chorus, with Gaga interjecting her verses in-between. Lyrically it has Wale's name repeated throughout and the rapper talking about things he has in comparison to other people,[8] opening with the line 'This how you start off '09, kickin' in the door and I'm everybody's problem'.[9] He also refers to fellow rapper M.I.A. with the line 'I'm the same way, M.I.A./ Me, Cool and Dre get high like planes'.[10]

Produced by Cool & Dre, the song was recorded at Allido Sound Studios in New York, by Derek Pacuk, while the mixing was done by Serban Ghanea.[5] Wale recalled in a 2011 interview with MTV News for Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside special, that the recording session did not go easy. He had traveled to the New York recording studio from Washington D.C. after a long night of partying. Gaga was already in the studio in her exuberant style with a big ribbon atop her head by which Wale was taken aback, and was a 'cultural difference' for him. In an effort to warm up to each other they made small talk about their respective record deals with Interscope. By the end of the session, Gaga had created five different hooks for 'Chillin' and added her vocals on the track. The rapper added, 'It took a while. Once we finally got the ball rolling, it was almost time to go. It was natural though. It's wack when you get in the studio with somebody and it's automatically music time — it feels fake. We were trying to feel each other out.'[11] Wale later added that he would like to collaborate with Gaga again on a track but it was unknown to him if Gaga would be interested.[12]

Music video[edit]

South Boston Waterfront, one of the locations where the video was shot

The music video for the song was directed by Chris Robinson and was posted on Interscope's YouTube channel on June 12, 2009. It features guest appearances from rappers Young Chris, Tre, Pusha T, Anwan Glover and Bun B. The video shows Wale and Gaga at the District of Columbia's Cardozo Senior High School[1] and Wale in various venues and streets in the District, including South Boston Waterfront. This includes one scene in the famous hidden clothing store Bodega in Boston where Wale tries on various clothes.[13] One of Gaga's characteristic Great Danes, which had also previously appeared in the music videos for 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face', appears in the video for 'Chillin', wearing Beats by Dr. Dre headphones.[14][15] Several posters of Barack Obama appear in the video. The music video was added to BET's TV rotation in the United States.[16] Chrissy Andrews from MuchMusic complimented Gaga's appearance in the music video, saying that 'this is the most 'toned down' I've ever seen Lady Gaga. She's wearing a short dress with pumps, but she's surprisingly without her facial lightning bolt, crystal staff or orbiting head piece (as seen on her Ellen appearance). One of the two massive dogs from her other videos does make an appearance, however.. with headphones on! Even without all of the crazy things we know Gaga for, she's still great in this video.'[17]

Critical reception[edit]

'Chillin' received mixed reviews from critics. Steve Roberts from MTV praised Gaga's verse and for employing a similar singing style to M.I.A.[1] Jason Lipshutz from Billboard complimented the 'club-ready single' for its 'bouncy hook and slick verses' and called the song 'the perfect precursor to Wale's long-awaited debut'.[16] Mehan Jayasuriya from PopMatters commended the song for being a 'token party jam' on the album track list. She added that 'for all the flack that the [track] has caught, it's still an indisputably catchy song, even if the 9th Wonder and Nick Catchdubs reworking from [Wale's] Back to the Feature stands as the definitive version.'[18] Andres Tardio from HipHopDX believed the composition of the song as 'Pop-friendly'.[19] A reviewer for XXL compared and described 'Chillin' as 'distinctly D.C.-sounding anthem'.[20] David Jeffries from AllMusic praised Wale's 'natural delivery and quirky sense of humor' in the song, likening his vocals to that of Jay-Z and Gaga's vocals to that of singer Rihanna.[4] Describing 'Chillin' as a 'club-friendly hopper', Chris Richards from The Washington Post believed that using Rihanna or M.I.A. on the track would have made it successful, rather than Gaga who was then considered a relatively unknown singer. Richards recalled a similar situation when Washington D.C. based go-go band Experience Unlimited had collaborated with androgynous singer Grace Jones on a track.[21] Sobhi Youssef from Sputnikmusic noticed that the song's production made it sound like a different track than the rest of Attention Deficit.[22]

New York Post critic Ryan Brockington liked the song, but questioned Gaga's emulation of M.I.A.[23] Mosi Reeves from Spin criticized Gaga's 'wanna-be-M.I.A. cadences', calling it 'unnecessarily crass'.[24] Another review from Spin by Brandon Soderberg panned the song, saying that '[i]t wasn't a Wale song and it wasn't a Gaga song with Wale wedged in there somewhere, either. 'Chillin' became something of an Internet rap watershed moment'.[25] Sean Fennessey from Pitchfork Media described the song as 'much-maligned', adding that 'there won't be much to gain from ['Chillin'].. This was the first step in Wale's multiple personality debacle and he seems to know as much—nothing else on Attention Deficit resembles the goofy sneakers-shouting writing here.'[26] In another review, Ryan Dombal from the same website criticized Wale's repetition of his name and the usage of the samples calling it 'unnecessary'.[10] Brian Howe from Paste described the track as 'flashy and hollow'.[27]The Greyhound gave the song a negative review and believed that 'with a lackluster hook and the repetition of the name 'Wale,' the airplay and sales of this single will depend greatly upon the vocals of Lady Gaga.'[3] Wilson McBee from Slant Magazine criticized both 'Chillin' and the follow-up single, 'World Tour', as 'tepid Cool & Dre productions in which Wale seems to be attempting Black Eyed Peas-style halftime-show rap.' McBee believed that the songs did not represent the true nature of the album.[28]Prefix magazine was also critical of the song saying that 'just when you think Wale understands the consequences of mindlessly horny partying.. he gives us the dumb, cheaply agreeable Lady Gaga feature 'Chillin'.'[29]
